Our Story

ASC emerged from 150,000 miles on the road to meet all kinds of people in the many different places where American soccer lives.

First organized as a 501(c)(3) civic research and education group, our Founding Members gathered behind William Gordon'sOpen Source Soccer, an independent project to preserve the histories of American soccer’s builders  participants in modern American soccer's most iconic moments plus the USA's most durable local, national, and international soccer organizations.

Launched in August 2016, the Open Source project soon included research required to present soccer's American story through the eyes of soccer's people, the wider public, and their stories with game.

Blending long-form interviews recorded on location, sport history museum studies, literature reviews of existing works about American soccer, field studies across 40 states, with original archival research, William captured a quintessential story now organized into ASC's three flagship projects.
